Our native Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) is a site to behold in Spring when it bursts into full flower!! The red tubular flowers with yellow centers are a pollinator magnet, especially for our beloved hummingbirds! Perfect for deck railings, metal fencing, or arbors and trellises. It can also be left to scramble along the ground, perhaps on a steep embankment.

This beauty is easy to get started in the garden, however, it may be the perfect example of the old gardener's saw 'First year it sleeps, second year it creeps, third year it leaps!!' In reality, the first year or two this tough plant is putting down a large root system to support its lush above-ground growth which can reach 30 feet or so in length. No worries if that's too much for you, as it responds well to pruning should you need to keep it smaller, and it blooms on new growth so no worrying about cutting off next year's bloom! I recommend pruning after the first flush of spring blooms as new growth may spur sporadic new blooms through the summer. In fall, birds enjoy the fleshy red fruits that appear on the vines.

The species name, sempervirens, always or ever-green, however, in our Zone 7 gardens, it is really only semi-evergreen, losing its leaves in winter but greening up with the first warming temps in early spring!

In spite of its vigorous growth, I've never found a stray one anywhere, unlike its yellow and white Japanese cousin, Lonicera japonica, which is the among the most invasive exotic pest plants in the U.S. (along with several Asian shrub honeysuckles).
