The dark purple to near-black flower petals with gold markings of Iris 'Black Gamecock' is perhaps the most stunning iris I've ever seen or grown (and I've grown a LOT of them!)!! This variety goes back many decades and is one of the Louisiana Irises, which is not one, but five different species and their hybrids generally found in the wet and swampy areas of Louisiana. It is also one of the most prolific bloomers of the irises I've grown, as well as being a strong spreader. You'll have extras you can share with friends in a few short years!

This award-winning iris variety is perfect along wet areas, near ponds, and even in standing water up to 6" deep. Fortunately, for gardeners with average soils, Black Gamecock adapts quite easily, although it might not spread as quickly. On top of that, Black Gamecock has amazing winter hardiness, growing as far north as Zone 4 (-10)!! It is best sited in full sun (with a little afternoon shade in the deep south), however, I accidentally planted some in mostly shade a few years back and it has continued to perform well there, also!!

Deer and rabbits leave this beauty alone, but reports are that hummingbirds like it. All in all, just a superb garden plant!!
