Goldenrods are one of the most important perennials you can plant in your garden if you're planting for pollinators!! They are keystone species, providing food and habitat for over 100 butterfly and moth species (especially their caterpillar larvae which feed on the foliage), as well as pollen for 42 specialized native bees! 97% of our bird population then rely on the insects drawn to this and other keystone species for survival.

Fortunately for us, Goldenrods are also beautiful, tough, and easy to grow, providing sunny color in mid to late summer or fall. This species is one of several that exist on the farm and in the region. It grows to about 2' tall and features multiple small yellow 'daisy-like' flowers clustered along one side of the bloom stem, and last for several weeks or more. (Cutting back spent blooms to the crown may encourage further blooms!) Once pollinated, the flowers then produce feathery seed heads that hold into the fall or winter where they can be consumed by wildlife, provide winter interest, or eventually get disbursed through the wind and rain.

In our zone 7 garden, the basal rosette of foliage remains through the winter and even shows red coloring as the cold weather sets in, always a welcome site in an otherwise drab and dreary season. I even found fresh new blooms as late as January 1st, long past frost and freeze warnings!! In other words, it's almost bomb-proof!

This offer is for a mature plant in a deep 3.5" container.
