Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) is a native perennial with upright bloom spikes with showy, fuzzy-looking purple flowers that open from the top down extending the show for a number of weeks in late spring or summer. This clump-forming plant grows from a bulb (or seed), and is most often found in moist soil conditions which leads to one of its other common name, Marsh Blazingstar. While it is fairly common in gardens, it is rather rare in the wild. In fact, the only time I've seen it in the wild, it was in a moist prairie opening in a forest!
As a garden plant, Blazing Star is easy and adapts well to average soil conditions, even tolerating short dry spells once established, and they make a great, long-lasting, cut flower! Individual plants have a relatively small footprint of 6" or so, but as plants mature they put off 'daughter bulbs' which expand the footprint and add more bloom spikes over time. Bloom pike heights vary due to site conditions, but can reach as much as 4 ft, although they're usually in the 2-3' range.
Somewhat surprisingly to beginning gardeners, Liatris species are in the Aster family (think Daisies or sunflowers) which make them magnets for bees, butterflies, moths and other pollinators. The feathery seedheads that appear after pollination can be important for wildlife and ornamental in their own right, however, they can be cut back for a tidier look if you prefer (and may encourage further blooms).
This offer is for three (3) 3.5" deep pots of two year old plants. I recommend planting with spacing of 12".
