3 Screaming Red Cardinal Flowers (Lobelia cardinalis) in 2.5" pots. Hummingbird favorite for late Summer!!

The intense red blooms of our native Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) practically scream at the hummingbirds to come feast on its nectar in mid to late summer! The hummers aren't the only ones attracted to this magnificent plant as butterflies, bees and other important pollinators are frequent visitors, as well. The showy flower stems arise from a rather modest basal rosette of foliage, a trait that seems to be common among Lobelias, and multiple bloom spikes sometimes occur, too.

Cardinal Flower does best in a good soil with consistent moisture, however, once established, it can withstand short periods of drought. I've found it in the wild in a dry creek bed and its surrounding floodplain where it was bone dry at the time. This makes Cardinal Flower ideal for rain gardens and other areas prone to periodic flooding. Typically, Lobelias are short-lived as individual plants (3-5 yrs is common), but they are prolific re-seeders, however, I have never found them to be problematic in that regard. Those with moister growing conditions may have a different experience, however, I'm not sure I would ever object to having too many of these stunningly beautiful plants!!

This offer is for three (3) 2.5" potted Red Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis). These are the same starter plants we sell to our wholesale nursery customers. Hardiness Zone is 4-9. Plant 6-12" apart. Grows up to 4' tall in bloom!
