The beautiful native Violet is finally being recognized and embraced as the tough and valuable plant that it is! Previously, violets were considered a nuisance and deterrence to the 'perfect lawn', but they are now embraced as a tough-as-nails goundcover, and in some cases, a lawn replacement!! (The typical grass lawn is a biological desert!)
This particular species of violet is a form of our common blue violet, Viola sororia, however, this particular variety sports white to light blue petals with blue in the center radiating out with blue stripes. The overall effect is the color has a gray tone, echoing the color of the Confederate Army's uniform.
Violets are very hardy, and adaptable to both sun and shade. They're also quite drought tolerant, pest and disease resistant. They make a great lawn substitute or replacement as well as a tough and spreading groundcover under trees. Much better than the highly invasive exotic pest plants sold at the Big Box stores like Vinca, Ivy, and Japanese Pachysandra (Spurge).
Hardy to Zones 3-7
