Introducing once of the coolest native plants I know, Green Dragon, and one that is rarely offered for sale, and usually only by specialty nurseries even then! BUT, not only is Green Dragon unique and rare, it also happens to be very easy to grow!! This extraordinary woodland plant is a cousin to the more widely known Jack-in-the-pulpit, and both are found throughout eastern North America in mature woodlands and forests from Canada to Mexico. Fortunately, both adapt quite well to your average shade garden, but personally, I find Green Dragon a much more interesting garden specimen! PLEASE NOTE: THESE PLANTS ARE NURSERY PROPAGATED AND NOT WILD DUG, an unethical and unsustainable practice by shady or uneducated sellers out to make a quick buck.
Green Dragon is scientifically know as Arisaema dracontium. While Jack-in-the-pulpit (A. triphyllum) arguably has somewhat showier flowers (known as a spathe), Green Dragon is a more dramatic landscape plant at maturity with a 2' tall single leaf stalk that grows in a semi-circle with between 5-13 leaflets. (Jack-in-the-pulpit have 3 leaflets and don't grow as tall.) It is this taller leaf structure that catches the eye as it grows amongst ferns, hostas, heuchera and other shade lovers. Younger plants add 1 or 2 new leaflets per year until reaching flowering size at about 7 years old.
The flower or spathe of Green Dragon has a long yellow 'tail' that comes out of the top of the spathe that is quite different from the Jack-in-the-pulpit, and once pollinated, the 'spadix' (flower part) will form a round-ish seed mass that turns from green to red over the summer. This seed head is quite showy, however, as it ripens the foliage will start to fade, yellow, and eventually disappear until next spring!. This is normal and your plant is not dying, so don't be alarmed when it happens! Green Dragon is a type of plant known as an 'ephemeral', usually woodland plants that grow and reproduce for only a few months in spring as the forest canopy leafs out before going dormant. Other well-known native ephemerals include trilliums and Virginia Bluebells, though there are many more. Green Dragon lasts longer in the garden than most, however. Interestingly, ephemerals tend to be bulbs, corms, or large fleshy roots that are able to withstand the weather changes of the year. Our Green Dragons are grown from seed, but form a bulb which gets larger every year and eventually puts off 'daughter' bulbs around it to make the show better and better over time! These bulbs can be safely dug after going dormant to spread around your garden, although it's best to wait until you have a mature patch.
This offer is for a 3.5" pot of Arisaema dracontium, Green Dragon, with one or more bulbs approximately 3 years old. These younger plants will likely go dormant earlier than a mature specimen, so don't panic when you see the leaves yellow in summer. Dry conditions may encourage dormancy earlier. These are unusual and highly desirable plants, but some patience is warranted.
