Threadleaf Bluestar, sometimes called Arkansas Bluestar, is an outstanding long-lived perennial native plant that was unknown to science until the 1940's! Since then, however, it has proven such an outstanding garden plant that it was named Perennial Plant of the Year in 2011!! This offer is for 3 (three) 2-3 y.o. bare-root plants ready for your garden. Powder- to sky-blue bloom panicles appear in mid spring and last for about a month, attracting Swallowtail Butterflies and other pollinators! The thin, 'threadleaf' foliage greens up as the plant puts on new growth from the base for the year, eventually reaching past the pollinated blooms as they turn into long, thin seedpods which add interest in fall when the Bluestar foliage turns yellow-gold as the days grow cooler and shorter.

Bluestars are deep-rooted plants that take several years to reach maturity, but become bigger and more lush as the years go by. My parent plants are 3-4 feet tall and 5+ feet wide! Give them room to grow over time. Their large size and delicate texture provide a great backdrop to summer bloomers and larger leaved plants in front. Once dormancy dormancy occurs in the fall and winter, the old stalks can be left to catch the snow then pruned in late winter to early spring, leaving about 6-8" left above ground for solitary native bees that can use them for nesting, important pollinators themselves!

Amsonia hubrichtii was discovered by American biologist, Leslie Hubricht, in the early 1940's and is found in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas, and possibly west to Oklahoma. It's highly adaptable to soil types, preferring perhaps average to sandy soil in full to part sun. Sited in a shadier spot, or too rich of a soil, the foliage may splay or flop. This can be addressed by growing through a peony ring or cutting the foliage back by half in spring, creating shorter but stronger stems. Amsonias are largely pest and disease free, too!

Rated for Zone 5-9. This offer is for three (3) 2.5" potted plants.
