Eastern Bluestar is one of those plants that just gets bigger and better with age, and they can live for decades! Of the three species I've grown to date, this one is the most wide-spread being native to most of the Eastern U.S. except upper New England and the Midwest. It is found in wet prairie or meadows, woodlands, along stream banks, slopes and more, but it is ver adaptable to any garden. In spite of its native tendency toward moister soils, it adapts well to just about any soil conditions including my drier, sandy soil in Tennessee. Once established, it is quite drought tolerant due to its deep taproot system, which makes it suitable for erosion control on slopes, as well.
Spring weather brings the plant alive from dormancy, soon opening its sky-blue flowers on sturdy stems. Flowers are star-shaped and bloom in panicled clusters, continuing for a month or more, longer than most perennials. The lush green foliage makes an attractive backdrop for later blooming plants, and as the temperatures cool in the fall, Eastern Bluestar puts on its final show with leaves changing to golden hues to complement your fall garden! Leaves drop in the winter, leaving their interesting seedpods with short, brown seeds which remind me of little cigars! They might reseed on occasion, but never invasively so in my experience. You can cut them back in late fall or early spring if you prefer a tidy garden, however, we rarely do.
Eastern Bluestar is best grown in full sun, however it will also grow in part to light shade, however, the stems may tend to flop in those conditions. It can be cut back by half or a third after blooming to give it a bushier, fuller appearance if so. Patience is well-rewarded with the Bluestars, as they will eventually grow into 4-5' wide and tall plants, giving them an almost shrub-like appearance in the landscape.
A little botanical trivia: Eastern Bluestar's scientific name is Amsonia tabernaemontana, which means 'little cottage on the side of a mountain'! Plant these exceptional plants in your landscape today for years of beauty!!
This offer is for three (3) 3.5" deep potted plants. Amsonias are deer-resistant. The Hardiness Zone is 3-9.
