Spectacular Royal Fern, Looks great in shade, even better in full sun!! 3.5" potted plant

$15.95

Shipping to United States: $9.99

Not as well known as its cousin, the Cinnamon Fern, our North American native Royal Fern is spectacular in any moist area in shade to full sun, where it puts on its most striking show growing 3-4' tall & wide with upright and spreading fronds. While Cinnamon Fern requires constant moisture, in the nursery we've found the Royal Fern is much more tolerant of dry spells, a welcome trait for folks like me with drier conditions!

Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis) is found widely around the world in temperate and subtropical regions, however, the North American variety is distinct and named O. regalis var. spectabilis, it being both regal and spectacular! (Sometimes referred to as O. spectabilis.) As with most ferns, Royal Fern makes a great compliment to the many larger leafed shade plants like the myriad cultivars of hosta, or our native ginger, Asarum candense, and other staples of the shade garden. In a wet sunny spot, they really thrive and show off, especially in the more northern regions of its growing range which extends into Canada! USDA Zones 3-9

Ferns, in general, are some of our most ancient plant forms and predate the eras of the dinosaurs, flowering plants, and insects. Osmundas have barely changed from their ancient forms hundreds of millions of years old!

This offer is for 1 Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis var. spectabilis) in a 3.5" pot.
