Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia) is a beautiful, tough and highly adaptable U.S. native shrub that should be absolutely more widely planted! This member of the rose family wakes up in early spring with clusters of pink-white buds which open to lightly fragrant white blooms all along its stems and light gray branches. The leaves are a dark green and finely toothed as typical of the family, but the real show begins in the fall as the leaves turn to burgundy and red shades, lasting for many weeks into early winter, adorned with clusters of red berries that rival just about any winterberry holly! As the name suggests, red chokeberry (& its black-berried cousin Aronia melanocarpa) is not very palatable to wildlife. Surprisingly, however, a jam or jelly can be made.

Red Chokeberry is typically found in wetland areas where it is native in eastern and central North America, however, it is perfectly at home in average soil conditions. It is somewhat upright in habit growing in the 6'-10' range and may sucker somewhat at the base, although not aggressively so. The Aronia's upright habit makes it an ideal companion for lower growing shrubs and perennials as the stems are fairly bare on the lower sections of the shrub giving it a somewhat airy appearance above the lower layer of plants. I'm rather surprised this fine shrub is not more widely known and planted!!

This offer is for one 3.5" potted plant that is garden-ready!! Hardy in zones 5-9, at least. Give extra water during drought periods, but will adapt to drier conditions once established.
