The gorgeous American Beautyberry shrub (Callicarpa americana) is a southeastern native (down to Mexico and Cuba!) sometimes found in open woodlands. It has a light airy quality to its structure and often grows 6-10' in size, on the smaller size for most shrubs. While the purple-berried variety is most often found in cultivation, there is also this exceptional white-berried variety, Callicarpa americana alba, which really stands out among all of the reds, oranges, yellows of fall when its large white berries put on a show for months! There is a much more common variety of Beautyberry sometimes found in cultivation which is a Japanese variety, C. dichotoma, but the berry size is much smaller compared to the American. It also has smaller leaves when compared to the native. I've grown both and they're both lovely plants, but the americana is hands down the showier plant in my (biased) opinion!

Beautyberry blooms in early summer with small white blooms by the hundreds which later become the much showier berries in fall, arranged in distinct clusters along the long stems. It is quite adaptable to sun or shade conditions, as well as soil type, and appears to be quite adaptable to extended periods of drought once it is established. The only time I found it in the wild was in a flood plain near a creek where there were hundreds of both the purple and white growing together! The growth habit can be a bit gangly but it takes pruning for shape well. I suggest selectively cutting out wayward stems if you have to, but it can be left untamed, as well, my preferred method.

Beautyberry is beloved by birds and deer and are an important food source for them. Somewhat surprisingly to me, I rarely, if ever, find a stray seedling. Its not just wildlife that enjoy the Beautyberry, however, as humans can make jellies, teas, and other goodies from the plant, and native peoples used it as a medicinal plant in various ways including as a repellent to biting insects!
