Long before I ever became a Fern Fanatic, the Autumn Fern always caught my eye! The name is appropriate as when new fronds appear throughout the growing season they sport shades of bronze, copper, and other autumnal colors before eventually turning a deep, calming and lush green! If you're new to hardy ferns for the garden, this is a great variety to start with due to its ease of care, soil conditions, and tolerance of neglect. While like most ferns it appreciates consistent moisture, once established, Autumn Fern is quite tolerant of periodic dry spells. In worst case conditions - no rain or water - the fronds may wither but the rhizome will sprout fresh new fronds when the moisture returns!

Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora) is a non-native species from Japan, Korea, China, and the Phillipines although it is related to many of our native ferns also in the Dryopteris genus such as Wood Fern, Male Fern, Lady Fern, and many others. None may be as easy to grow as the Autumn Fern, however. And this fern plays nice with other native and non-native shade plants, slowly spreading by short rhizomes. Makes a great counterpoint to hostas and other large-leaved plants!

Autumn Fern is not a fast grower; it can take around five years to reach its full size of 2' or more. A soil rich in organic matter is very helpful, as is regular moisture, with dappled shade beneath deciduous trees an ideal spot. It will take morning sun with no problem, hot mid-day sun is not recommended.

This offer is for three (3) starter ferns in 2.5" pots, nursery propagated from spores of the well-known cultivar 'Brilliance'. These should be spaced 12-18" apart, and can be easily moved if they outgrow their space!
