The ever-popular Purple Coneflower is undoubtedly the most popular and well-known native perennial in the U.S. and beyond! (Our native sunflowers, Helianthus species, are also popular around the world, however, the most well-known are annuals.) Known scientifically as Echinacea purpurea, Purple Coneflowers have been a staple of gardens for decades with many new cultivars and colors introduced to garden centers every year, however, it's hard to beat the straight species for its beauty and ease of cultivation! And of course, Purple Coneflower is a pollinator magnet during its long bloom season, and birds love the nutritious and delicious seeds that form in the showy center cone in the fall, a favorite of goldfinches!
For best success with your Purple Coneflowers, plant in a loamy soil with good drainage and consistent moisture, however, once established they can take dry spells. Native from Texas to New York, Echinacea purpurea can be found in moist prairies, meadows and open woods. As common as it is in gardens and nurseries, it's actually rather uncommon in the wild. Blooming in mid to late summer, the bloom season can be extended by deadheading the spent blooms. Just don't forget to leave some for the birds!
Echinacea is also a well-known herb and has been used medicinally for hundreds of years in this country and beyond.
This offer is for three (3) Echinacea purpurea in 3.5" x 5" deep pots. Hardiness zones 3-9.
