The Arrowwood Viburnum, one of only a handful of viburnum shrubs native to North American, is also one of the best and most desirable due to its beautiful spring flowers, dense growth habit, and delicious blue-black berries beloved by birds in the fall! Growth habit is generally upright and size may reach up to 12-15' tall in ideal growing conditions. It's tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions from full sun to part shade, and is often found in the wild in woodland conditions and loamy soil, but is very adaptable. The common name of Arrowwood is in reference to the use of this species by the native peoples for arrow production.
Sometimes called the Southern Arrowwood Viburnum, the white spring flowers offer both pollen and nectar to attract native bees, flies, and beetles. Bumblebees, butterflies and skippers may also visit the flowers for nectar. Various moth caterpillars feed on the striking veined and toothed foliage, which is arranged in pairs along the stems. Once thought to be in the honeysuckle family, Viburnums are now classed in their own family, Adoxaceae, and are somewhat distantly related to Dogwoods!
Like most Viburnums, the Arrowwood has excellent fall color, typically in the reds to purple shades among others. The blue-black fruits (technically drupes) are eaten by various game birds and songbirds, and to a lesser extent, various mammals. Deer may nibble, but it's not one of their preferred grazing plants. Viburnum dentatum is native to the eastern half of North America, Hardiness zone 2-8.
This offer is for one (1) potted Viburnum dentatum plant in a 3.5" x 5" pot.
