A lot of plants make berries in the fall but the American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) has the largest and showiest of them all! Surprisingly, it is not common in the nursery trade, yet its daintier cousin, Japanese Beautyberry (C. dichotoma) is much more widely available. While pretty, the berries and leaves are much more substantial on the American species. (See the comparison photo above between the two species.) Note that there is also a white variety (C. americana alba) which we have listed, as well.

Primarily found in warmer zones (Zone 6) of the U.S. from Maryland in the north to Florida through Texas in the south, it is often found in the wild in flood plains near water, however, it is widely adaptable to soil types, and grows in full sun to part shade. Once established, it is drought tolerant, as well! I have one growing in the shade of an old Walnut tree with no issues, at all.

American Beautyberry has delicate small lavender to pinkish purple flowers that bloom in a ring around each node of the plant in summer. While not particularly showy as far as flowers go, they readily attract pollinators which lead to the rings of showy purple berries in fall, some on upright growing stems while others loosely arch toward the ground. The berries can last for months as they ripen and provide food for both wildlife and humans! The roots have been used in herbal teas, and freshly crushed leaves have been used to repel biting insects, as well. Plant these extraordinary shrubs in your garden and have all the neighbors asking about it!!
