Help save the Monarch Butterfly with this gorgeous summer blooming perennial! Milkweeds, the genus Asclepias, are the ONLY plant family that Monarch caterpillars feed on. Milkweed plants have been decreasing rapidly across the U.S. due to agriculture, urban expansion (aka sprawl) and other habitat loss. As a result, Monarch Butterflies are now on the Endangered Species list! But you can do your part to help these treasured butterflies by growing these beautiful and tough native plants in your home garden and landscape! Once established, Butterfly Weed is drought tolerant and adaptable to just about any soil type (except wet or poor draining). Grow in full to part sun.

Years before I became a certified plant nerd I was always captivated by a bright orange flower that seemed to herald the start of summer. I once took a wildflower guide with me on my occasional walk through my grandparent's field where I learned the name Asclepias tuberosa, Butterflyweed. I was hooked, and I've never forgotten its name, and my love for the plant has only deepened in the decades since. I always know summer has arrived when I see its bright orange to red flower clusters peeking through the grass!

Various butterflies, bees and even hummingbirds are attracted to the bright orange flowers of Butterflyweed, and once pollinated, they will eventually create an upright seedpod that splits open in the fall to release small round seeds attached to a silky thread-like structure that floats on the air to scatter the seeds far and wide! Unlike its cousin, Common Milkweed (A. syriaca) which is a large plant and prolific spreader via underground roots, Butterflyweed is well behaved, stays in the 2-3' tall range and plays nice with other plants in the garden. Due to its thick tuberous roots - the source of its species name tuberosa - Butterflyweed is quite drought tolerant once it's established, a real plus in these times of climate chaos. Surprisingly, it's also sometimes used in rain gardens and bio-swales so the occasional inundation is tolerated, as well. Best sited in full to part sun, just about any soil except constantly wet. This plant is a must-have for pollinator gardens of all types!

This offer is for one (1) 3.5" x 5" pots of Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Milkweed. USDA Hardiness Zone 3-9. Deer and Rabbit resistant.
