Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium nipponicum v. pictum) is the only fern ever designated Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association, and for good reason, as it's colorful, easy to grow, and drought tolerant, all qualities that few other ferns can match! While it is not a North American native plant, it is related to many of our native ferns, not the least of which is the near-ubiquitous Lady Fern (A. felix-femina) found on every continent except Antarctica! But it's the colorful fronds of silver, green, red, purple and more that sets the Painted Fern apart from all others!

By summer many shade gardens lack the color provided by spring flowers, relying on texture for interest among the many shades of green. Painted Fern provides both texture AND a splash of color, lighting up darker areas of the garden. Painted Ferns can also take a fair amount of sun, as well, but may require more water to stay fresh looking. (You can always cut back any damaged or dry fronds; ferns put off fresh new growth until frost!)

Ferns, in general, are some of the oldest living plants on Planet Earth, remaining largely unchanged for over hundreds of millions of years, outliving the dinosaurs! All in all, a highly successful group of plants. Many ferns have very specific cultural requirements which can be difficult for the average gardener to mimic at home, however, Painted Ferns are quite adaptable and require little in the way of special care once established.
