Ozark Bluestar (Amsonia illustris) Prolific and Easy Wildflower, early nectar source for Pollinators!! 3 plants in 3.5" pots!!

Also known as Showy Bluestar and Missouri Blue Star, Ozark Bluestar is native to just a handful of states in the central U.S. but can be grown in just about anyone's garden! (USDA Zones 5-9) The periwinkle blue and star-shaped flowers grow in showy clusters in early to mid spring offering nectar to bees and butterflies when little else is available.

Of the three species of Amsonia I'm currently growing Amsonia illustris is the one I have the least experience with but it appears to grow slightly smaller than the Eastern and Threadleaf Bluestars (A. tabernaemontana and A. hubrichtii, respectively). It also has the largest (widest) leaves of the three, however, there can be a great deal of variance plant to plant. Ozark Bluestar appears to grow about 3' by 3' vs the 5' plus mature size of the Eastern and Threadleaf species.

Like all of the Amsonias, Ozark Bluestar comes to life in spring with its clouds of star-shaped blooms, typically lasting about a month, perhaps more, followed by lush green foliage which makes a good backdrop for summer blooms, then finally turns red to gold hues as the temps cool off and the plant prepares for a well-deserved winter nap! You can cut back the old stems in fall or early spring, however I rarely do. They just fade away as new growth appears in spring. It should be noted the hollow tubes from last year's stems may make a suitable home for solitary bees.
