The native Buttonbush (sometimes Button Bush) is a beautiful upright shrub that I never thought I would be able to grow due to its natural habitat in or near water. Most of my property is dry, upland sandy soil and entirely rain dependent. Not exactly a wetland friendly ecotype. But, as I often do, I brought a couple of plants home and stuck them somewhere in the nursery to fend for themselves and figured I would find them dead at some point. Surprisingly, a year or two later I came back across them and not only were they still alive but they were thriving, having rooted in the ground through the pot. I was stunned. Then they started blooming with these little white balls covered in antennae that attracted pollinators of all types and sizes and I was hooked! And my admiration for this beautiful and versatile shrub only grows over time.

This great and versatile shrub will thrive in just about any garden or landscape regardless of soil and sun exposure. I've never tried full shade but it certainly doesn't mind at least half day shade. While it doesn't have much in the way of fall foliage color, it does have beautiful and colorful new foliage as it appears in spring and beyond.

Buttonbush can be found from eastern Canada all the way to Central America including a large part of the eastern and central U.S., as well, occurring in wetland conditions typically. This makes it an excellent choice for bank stabilization, erosion control and rain gardens in addition to the shrub border. USDA Hardiness Zone 5-9, possibly colder.

Deer typically leave Buttonbush alone, although some browse may be possible, In addition to its pollinator services, Buttonbush seeds are highly desirable by birds, waterfowl, and small mammals.
