This quaint, old-fashioned shrub has largely fallen by the wayside in this era of 'franken-plants' with their overly large showy blossoms that inhabit the big-box stores and nursery trade these days, but the Carolina Allspice or Sweetshrub was much more commonly grown in the days of yore. And for good reason: it's tough, beautiful, highly adaptable, easy to grow, and it's dark red to maroon blooms are fragrant, with hints of pineapple, banana and strawberry!! (Like many fragrant plants, they are most aromatic during the time of day when their pollinators are active, and with Sweetshrub, the fragrance intensifies with the heat.)

Carolina Allspice typically grows to 6-12' tall and wide and is adaptable to sun or shade. A little afternoon shade is appreciated in hotter zones. It's not fussy about soil but well-drained is the preference. It's also drought tolerant once established!

Leaves are a glossy green and turn to yellow-gold in fall. They can be fragrant when bruised or crushed. Plant this enchanting old-fashioned shrub near walkways or patios to enjoy its many wonders!!
